About the project
The World of the Odyssey is a public-knowledge project devoted to Homer’s world and, in particular, to the Odyssey and the cycle of the Trojan War.
The site brings together information about the characters, peoples, places and episodes that belong to that world. It is intended to accompany the reading of the Iliad and the Odyssey, as well as the many traditions that later developed around their protagonists.
One of the project’s aims is to distinguish, whenever possible, what the Homeric poems say from what belongs to later authors and traditions. Greek myths do not form a single, unchanging narrative: different authors transmitted different versions, and those differences are part of their richness.
The information is presented with an educational purpose, while seeking to maintain rigour in the use of sources and a clear, accessible reading experience.
